Moodboard

My idea for this project was to create a portal in a garage, and my main job was to use houdini to create the effects of smoke and lightning, and to synthesize the portal model and vfx effects onto the video.

Modeling

Starting from the previous section, my idea was to create a lost factory or lab-like environment where the protagonist would venture and eventually discover a mysterious portal that had been left behind. So I plan to make a portal during the modeling phase, and then for the other parts I plan to download ready-made models from the Internet. Finally, I completed the layout in maya, and then made a portal based on the shape of the portal in the reference.

Layout

This week, I imported the previous model into houdini, and also exported the camera from nuke and imported it into houdini. In addition, I also downloaded some materials from the Internet and imported them into houdini as an atmosphere to set off, trying to create the feeling of an abandoned factory laboratory. I also made a particle effect of a portal and put it in as part of my body.

Rendering

I choose the karma renderer in houdini for the rendering scheme. This is the first time I try to use the usd process to make my works. With the development of the industry, usd has been fully integrated into the industrial process pipeline, so I need to master the latest and most cutting-edge technology through this case. On rendering, I plan to render the shadows individually and import them into nuke for compositing, thus ensuring the true lighting of the model.

Composition

During the synthesis process, I mainly used different channels in nuke to match the scene. My main idea was to make the whole scene feel like a ruined, dark abandoned test site, so I emphasized the sense of light and shadow in the production process, hoping to match 3d objects to the original scene through multiple channels.
