Introduction & Description

My name is Dang Haixin, and my English name is Hason. I’m studying Visual Effects at UAL. Here, I will introduce my independent project (IP) “Balloon Festival”. In this creation, I want to depict a more dreamy style, which requires me to be closer to this style in the final synthesis of nuke and the early model making.

Influences & Inspirations

The following is my emotional version, in this emotional version, I want to reflect the blurred feeling of the dream and the feeling of animation, which requires my final product color must be bright, and there must be good-looking clouds, so I should take these conditions into account in the early modeling, as close as possible to this direction.

Working Process

Rotoing

The first step is to layer the material by using roto nodes in nuke to draw the mask and tracking nodes to match the mask’s motion. Finally, the mountains in the video are dug out respectively to prepare for the next hot air balloon synthesis in the future.

Element processing

In this step, I follow the same process for the different elements. First of all, these elements are downloaded from the Internet pictures, before processing, I first threw these pictures into PS for processing, and all of them can be removed from the original pictures, of course, in nuke using Roto button out, but this time I want to change the method.

In the second step, I put all the processed elements into nuke, and multiplied their alpha channels into rgb channels with pre-multiplied nodes to capture the images. Then I first made displacement animation with transform nodes, and then simulated depth of field by increasing blur according to distance and distance, and finally added grade nodes to adjust colors. And add matchmove to match movement.

Modeling

In the third step, I modeled the hot air balloon in maya, dismantled the uv, and finally affixed the material to the hot air balloon, completing the work of the main hot air balloon.

After completing the modeling of the hot air balloon, I completed the production of a dream whale model in maya. This whale is an ordinary whale model that I downloaded from the Internet without materials, but in order to conform to the atmosphere of my work, I modified the whale model, added some science fiction elements, and made materials and animations.

Also, I created a cloud in houdini, just to make the whole scene look more dreamy.

Change Sky and Color Grading

In this last step, I adjusted the overall color to make it look more dreamy and like the color of animation. I used the mountain mask of different levels that I had pulled out before to grade and adjust the color, and made independent adjustments to different picture areas and different colors. Finally, I changed the sky and superimposed two different skies to achieve the desired effect.
